Find Your Voice, 2020 MIPA Summer Journalism Workshop

Broadcast Boot Camp – Home Studio Edition

About this class

Interested in creating better videos? Producing better interviews? Telling better stories? Creating a newscast without a broadcast studio? Then the MIPA Broadcast Boot Camp is what you need. Every studio has changed how they do business due to the new social distancing regulations, and what they’ve found is that they can produce some extremely effective shows from home by getting better at some basics. Learn the tips from the 2019 Michigan film educator of year who can show you some of the techniques that will bring your videos to the next level and find out for yourself.

You will learn:

  • How to plan your films like a storyteller, using two column scripts and/or storyboards to prepare your news package
  • Discussing filming in challenging situations similar to what you will encounter as a broadcast journalist in school (like classrooms, hallways, auditoriums, gyms, football stadiums, etc.)
  • Practicing different shots (Close-up/Medium Shot/Wide Shot/Over the Shoulder etc…) and the importance of shot sequencing to tell your story
  • Getting that “film look” using the manual controls on your DSLR camera with shallow depth of field and letterboxing
  • Adding creative b-roll to enhance your story and avoid jump cuts
  • Discussing 3-point lighting, studio lighting, on-location lighting and the importance of exposure settings
  • Working with different microphones in different situations, focusing on lavalier mics, boom mics and handheld dynamic mics
  • Adding natural sound to your news packages, and effectively using music knowing the emotion each technique produces
Incorporating the best royalty free background music for your films
  • Writing and producing voice overs to begin, transition and conclude your story
  • Utilizing on-camera talent technique to introduce and conclude packages while integrating basic anchoring tips
  • Editing clips to enhance pacing making your packages more interesting
  • Using professional editing software to add titles, transitions and color correction
  • Producing a MIPA Today broadcast news show
  • Practicing skills through independent pursuit of guided projects and tasks
