SUMMARY:2022 MIPA Summer Journalism Workshop
DESCRIPTION:It’s time to return to the campus of Michigan State University for the annual Michigan Interscholastic Press Association Summer Journalism Workshop. \n\n\n\nWhether you’re a writer\, photographer\, designer\, yearbook editor or news anchor — or if you’re just starting to explore journalism — MIPA will help you meet your goals and prepare for whatever challenges lie ahead. \n\n\n\nYou’ll spend five days living and learning on MSU’s East Lansing campus with some of the best instructors in the nation as you become a better journalist\, explore print or digital media creation and find your voice. \n\n\n\nEach participant may enroll in one workshop course. \n\n\n\nMIPA accepts participants entering grades 7-12 (for the upcoming fall) for any of our workshop courses. \n\n\n\nThis is an in-person\, residential program. Participants will stay in an MSU residence hall with at least one roommate. Meals are provided in a residential hall cafeteria. Workshop sessions are held in MSU classrooms\, which may be a short walk from the residence hall. MIPA follows all Michigan State University safety protocols related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Pandemic conditions at the time of our program could result in cancellation or a switch to remote learning. \n\n\n\nLearn More About the Summer Workshop and Register to Attend \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLast day to register for this course: July 19 \n\n\n\nLearn More About the MIPA Summer Journalism Workshop \n\n\n\nPayment Policy\n\n\n\nA nonrefundable deposit of $40 is due at the time of registration to hold a spot in one of our classes. How to Pay Only the Deposit at Registration Any balance remaining should be paid by July 1. If you are registering on or after July 1\, please pay the full fee at registration. \n\n\n\nRegistrations on or after July 1 include a $30 late registration fee. \n\n\n\nAll workshop fees must be paid before a participant is allowed to take part in our programming. If your school has said it will pay for part or all of the registration fee\, please verify payment with your teacher and/or school office before the start of the program. \n\n\n\nParticipants who owe a balance may pay by cash\, money order\, cashier’s check or credit card. We reserve the right to decline personal checks after July 1. Payments by credit card can be made at https://mipamsu.org/payment \n\n\n\nBounced checks will be assessed a $30 service fee and the participant will be removed from registration until a credit card payment\, money order or cashier’s check for the registration amount plus the service fee has been received. \n\n\n\nRefund Policy\n\n\n\nWe will give full refunds until July 1\, minus the $40 nonrefundable deposit. After July 1\, refunds of 50% are available if cancellations are received at least 24 hours prior to check-in. If for some reason you cannot come to the workshop\, you may transfer your registration to another person. \n\n\n\nThere will be no refunds for no-shows or those who do not complete the program for any reason\, including any participant who is removed from our program for violating our rules. \n\n\n\nIf MIPA cancels a workshop course or switches to remote learning prior to the start of the program\, participants will have the option to transfer to another course or to receive a full refund. \n\n\n\nCOVID-19 Protocols\n\n\n\nMIPA strongly encourages all participants be vaccinated against COVID-19 and boosted with an FDA-approved or -authorized or WHO-approved vaccine. Learn more about the COVID-19 vaccine. \n\n\n\nMIPA follows all Michigan State University safety protocols related to COVID-19. Youth participants in our program are considered campus visitors under current university policy. More information about MSU COVID-19 protocols for campus visitors can be found at MSU’s Together We Will website. MIPA employees follow the same requirements as MSU faculty and staff. \n\n\n\nParticipants agree to follow MIPA and MSU health and safety protocols\, which may change without notice in response to pandemic conditions. \n\n\n\nPandemic conditions at the time of our program could result in cancellation or a switch to remote learning. \n\n\n\nParticipants will be sent home immediately if they show symptoms consistent with COVID-19 or other communicable diseases\, or upon guidance from public health authorities. MIPA will take reasonable efforts to allow participants sent home due to such circumstances to continue to participate in class sessions remotely.

SUMMARY:2021 MIPA Summer Journalism Workshop
DESCRIPTION:When a group of student editors met in fall 1921 to form the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association\, they declared the new organization’s motto as “A Better Press for a Better World.” That phrase remains at the heart of nearly everything we do today. So to kick off our centennial year\, we’re celebrating that motto and the important role journalism plays in a democracy at the 2021 MIPA Summer Journalism Workshop. \n\n\n\nIt doesn’t matter whether you’re a writer\, photographer\, designer\, yearbook editor or news anchor — the work you do makes an impact in big and small ways. You help us better understand ourselves and our community\, hold the powerful accountable\, entertain us\, shine a light on important issues and celebrate our accomplishments. Those are just some the important roles journalists play in making the world better\, and why MIPA has spent the last century making better journalists. \n\n\n\nOur 2021 program is online. Expect to meet with the instructor live via a video conferencing platform for sessions in the morning and afternoon. Instructors may also run lab periods\, group work sessions or student meetings throughout the day. DESCRIPTION:SPJ\, the Google News Initiative and the Michigan State University School of Journalism will host a free online training to learn to use some of Google’s suite of tools being used for news. \nTools included in this training may include: Fact-check Explorer\, Google Dataset Search\, Google Earth Measure tool\, Google Earth Timelapse\, Google Public Data Explorer\, and Flourish interactive graphics and maps \nThe training is led by Mike Reilley\, editor and founder of the Journalist’s Toolbox and a visiting professor in data journalism and digital journalism at the University of Illinois-Chicago. \nThis event will be held via Zoom and is only open to MSU journalism students\, journalism faculty and MIPA-member advisers. DESCRIPTION:Best Theme Ever\n\n\n\nAbout this class\n\n\n\nA great yearbook theme is more than a title for your book. It is the driving force that inspires new stories\, and the vehicle to tell the same stories differently. It’s a historical marker of your school and community (and our world) this year. A great theme inspires design decisions that highlight storytelling and photos that tell stories in unique ways. A great theme will keep your staff engaged and energized all year\, because it creates a cohesive focus and can be explored endlessly. \n\n\n\nOur approach will include completing the following steps to a great yearbook theme: \n\n\n\nChoosing and testing a theme for versatility and feelingDrafting\, revising\, and editing opening copy to tell the story of the book with style and specificityAdding verbal layers with an exhaustive list of synonyms\, idioms\, and feature page/story ideasDeveloping a list of theme-driven interview questions to inspire story anglesChoosing fonts\, experimenting with combinations\, exploring font family behaviors\, and designing headline packagesDeveloping a color palette and experimenting with combinations that work and don’t work.Designing a font and color style guideDesigning a cover and revising as needed\, as theme developsCreating a library of module ideas for design and theme focusWorking through how to organize the book logically with the theme and to infuse new theme-inspired storytelling opportunities in the book.\n\n\n\nInstructor\n\n\n\nButzu\n\n\n\nAva Butzu \n\n\n\nAva Butzu teaches yearbook at Grand Blanc High School in Michigan and is a 2018 H.L. Hall Special Recognition Adviser. Her yearbook staff produces a nearly 400-page book with extensive coverage/design. Her staff has earned awards at multiple levels\, including CSPA Crowns and Pacemaker nominations. Butzu’s interest in approaching yearbook as a complete journalism and entrepreneurship team-building experience has encouraged her students to pursue design\, writing\, journalism\, photography and marketing careers. She believes there is no greater honor than working with students who capture the moments and people at their school in meaningful\, creative ways each year. \n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\n\nSession 2: July 20-31\, 2020Daily schedule (subject to change):\n\nLive instruction: 10 a.m. to noon EDT\nOffice hours to meet with instructor: Afternoons\nIndependent time needed to complete assignments\n\nLast day to register: Friday\, July 17\n\n\n\nThis online summer workshop course runs two weeks. Trending graphic design and visual artistry will be emphasized. Students will be given access to a web-based version of InDesign for the duration of the course. Each day will include direct online instruction of graphic design concepts and tools followed by practice. SUMMARY:A Better Press for a Better World: Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier

We invite middle and high school students to learn directly from professional journalists and others in the media industry during our weekly online program. \nThis week\nIn 1983\, the principal of Hazelwood East High School outside St. Louis\, Missouri\, censored the student newspaper. The paper included a special teen issue section with articles on teen pregnancy and the impact of divorce on students. \nMembers of the student staff sued. \nThe case reached the U.S. Supreme Court\, which held in 1988 that a high school-sponsored newspaper produced as part of a class and without a “policy or practice” establishing it as a public forum for student expression could be censored.if school officials demonstrate a reasonable educational justification and where their censorship was viewpoint neutral. \nHazelwood remains one of the most influential student speech cases\, expanding school control over student speech from previous precedent. Kuhlmeier. \nThe case involved censorship of articles in The Spectrum\, the student newspaper of Hazelwood East High School in St. Louis\, Missouri. The school principal removed articles concerning teen pregnancy and divorce because he felt individuals could be identified in the articles. The Supreme Court ruled against the students\, allowing school administrators more authority to censored school-sponsored newspapers. \nKuhlmeier\, 54\, lives in Rogersville\, Missouri\, a small community in southwest Missouri. She works for a large insurance company handling workers’ compensation. She has been married to Mike Frey for 16 years and is the mother to two biological adult children\, Haley and Eric\, and five stepchildren. \nKuhlmeier actively travels and speaks regarding her experiences with censorship. She has been an advocate speaking to state legislators across the country about the New Voices movement in hopes to pass laws to restore rights to student journalists lost in the Hazelwood case.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nModerated by Jeremy Steele\, Michigan Interscholastic Press Association\nJeremy Steele is executive director of the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association and a specialist in the School of Journalism at Michigan State University\, where he teaches various reporting courses. Steele is an award-winning journalist who has also worked for one of Michigan’s largest independent public relations firms. \nCyr \nElizabeth Cyr\, yearbook and newspaper adviser\, Stockbridge High School\nElizabeth Cyr has found the secret to a happy life: helping young people unlock their potential. She’s been doing so at Stockbridge High School for two decades. Nothing makes her happier than helping students unleash their ideas through contemporary graphic design tools and strong journalism conventions. She coaches staffs on Uncaged News & Online and Panther yearbook. Her staffs have won numerous awards at the state and national levels including the MIPA Spartan\, NSPA Pacemaker and CSPA Silver Crown. She was named the 2017 Golden Pen Adviser and earned the 2019 JEA Diversity Award. She also advises MIPA’s All-State Student Journalist Advisory Cohort\, a statewide group of student journalists from member schools.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

In her time at Michigan State\, she worked for the student newscast\, Focal Point News\, as an assignment editor\, producer\, reporter and anchor. She has been an intern at HOMTV in Okemos\, Michigan\, NBC affiliate WDIV in Detroit and The State News\, Michigan State’s student newspaper. \nHer experience has propelled her into an enriching career as a full time reporter. With her focus being in politics\, she has already helped cover important stories at KMTV on illegal immigration and the 2020 presidential race. Ruta moved to the United States when she was a little girl. Born in Siauliai\, Lithuania\, Ruta loves to travel back to her home country and visit new ones as often as she can. \n \nTony Black\, CNYCentral\nTony Black joined the CNYCentral team in January 2020 as a multimedia journalist\, covering central New York for the Syracuse-based NBC\, CBS and CW affiliates. \nTony graduated in December 2019 with a degree in broadcast journalism from Michigan State University\, where his love for storytelling began. During his time at MSU\, he worked for the Emmy award-winning college newscast\, Focal Point News. Starting as a producer\, he worked his way up to senior producer before becoming a reporter and anchor. He is honored to have received awards from the Society of Professional Journalists\, the Broadcast Education Association\, the Michigan Association of Broadcasters as well as the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for his work as a producer and reporter. \nTony has held internships at FOX 2 News in Detroit\, WOOD-TV 8 in Grand Rapids and HOMTV in Meridian Township\, Michigan. \n \nMike Castellucci\, Michigan State University School of Journalism\n\nMichael Castellucci says he’s been known to “phone it in.” His innovative work with his iPhone has netted him worldwide attention and acknowledgement as a pioneer in mobile journalism. \nWhile working in broadcast TV in Dallas\, Castellucci shot an entire half hour special on his iPhone. “Phoning It In” — which he also produced\, wrote and edited — captured popular acclaim and high-profile industry recognition\, including Emmy and Edward R. Murrow Awards. Castellucci followed-up with a sequel and thereby set the stage for additional awards and speaking invitations regarding the ground-breaking show. He has worked in Dallas at WFAA-TV\, in San Diego at KUSI-TV and in Los Angeles at KCBS-TV. \n \nBob Gould\, Michigan State University School of Journalism\nBob Gould is an award-winning broadcast journalist who has spent nearly three decades in the industry first working in local news and then teaching students the craft of visual storytelling. \nBob started his career as a TV news photojournalist in 1990\, shooting and editing stories daily at WILX-TV in Lansing\, but after a couple of years\, moved to WZZM-TV in Grand Rapids. Prior to moving to Mississippi in 2019\, he spent nearly four years at the Greenville News in South Carolina\, where he was an editor overseeing a team of seven reporters. Over his career\, Dixson has been a reporter\, multimedia journalist\, digital producer and editor. He is a graduate of Michigan State University. \n \nRemi Monaghan\, KTEN-TV\nRemi Monaghan is the weekend sports anchor for KTEN\, an NBC affiliate that covers parts of Texas and Oklahoma. \nBorn and raised in Metro Detroit\, Remi grew up watching Detroit-area teams\, which fueled her passion for sports. In high school\, she had her first taste of sports broadcasting in a TV production class\, which she credits for her love and appreciation for television. \nRemi spent four years at Michigan State University in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences as a journalism major. She minored in sports journalism and completed five different internships during that time. \nAs a student broadcaster for BTN Student U\, she was able to be the color commentator and sideline reporter for several MSU sporting events that were broadcast live to the BTN website. \n \nDan Woike\, Los Angeles Times\nDan Woike is the national basketball writer for the Los Angeles Times\, a job he moved into after covering the Chargers’ first season back in Los Angeles for The Times. He previously covered the Clippers during the “Lob City” era for the Orange County Register. He’s also covered the Angels\, the Dodgers and USC while in Los Angeles. A Chicagoan in search of good pizza on the West Coast\, he’s always looking for story tips and ideas. DESCRIPTION:MIPA’s annual membership meeting\, which normally occurs during the adviser luncheon at the Spring Awards event\, instead will take place via Zoom video conference at 9:30 a.m. April 20. Member advisers will receive information via email on how to join this meeting via web video or phone. \nMIPA’s bylaws and state law requires the organization to hold an annual meeting. At the meeting\, MIPA’s leaders will update members about the organization’s activities. \nOur Officer Recruitment Committee\, chaired by Kaitlin Edgerton\, also will present candidates for MIPA’s board. Three positions are up for election. Additional nominations may be made from the floor at that time. \nAs occurred last year\, elections for these board offices will take place via electronic ballot during a 20-day period following the annual meeting.

DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text] \nAbout MIPA EdCamps\nJoin other journalism\, yearbook\, broadcast and media advisers at a MIPA EdCamp! EdCamps provide FREE professional development training to teachers. \nWHAT TO BRING:\nA pen or pencil\, a laptop/iPad OR lined paper for notes\, access to your class files (if possible\, to share)\, something to drink (MIPA will provide lunch). \nWHAT TO EXPECT:\nIf you haven’t been able to participate in an EdCamp yet\, give it a try. Some of you many be hesitant because you don’t really know what we do at EdCamp\, so here’s a basic rundown:\nAs people arrive\, they write answers to five questions on chart paper around the room: \n\nWhat went well for you this year?\nWhat were your struggles this year?\nWhat questions do you have?\nWhat do you want to share about\, if anything?\nWhat do you want to do/discuss/accomplish today?\n\nThen\, we introduce ourselves and explain what we’d like to learn more about or identify specific questions we have. The conversation that follows is guided by the needs of the group and we try to help answer everyone’s questions in the remaining time.
