MIPA has run a summer program with our partners at the Michigan State University School of Journalism since 1984. We took our program online for the first time in summer 2020 in response to the global coronavirus pandemic. Along with all other Michigan State University youth programs, we are offering an online-only program again for summer 2021.
MIPA stands for the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association. We’re a statewide nonprofit group of middle and high school journalism and media production programs across the state. Our members are the school newspapers, yearbooks, video programs and news websites at schools all over the state of Michigan. We provide a variety of programming throughout the school year, including conferences and contests. We’ve been based in the MSU School of Journalism since 1982, but our organization was founded in 1921. Learn more about MIPA
Ages of Participants
- MIPA accepts participants entering grades 7-12 (for the upcoming fall) for any of our workshop classes.
- Current year high school graduates also may participate!
Our 2021 program is offered in two sessions. Each session lasts five days. Some workshop courses run during Session 1, some run during Session 2 and a few “master classes” span both sessions. Classes start on a Monday and instruction runs through Friday morning. On Friday afternoon, we will hold an awards ceremony to recognize participants.
Our classes meet live online. Regular attendance is required to successfully complete our workshop classes. Class sessions generally are not recorded.
Expect to meet with the instructor live via a video conferencing platform in the morning and afternoon for the duration of the program. Instructors may work with participants to establish additional times to meet for lab periods, group work sessions or participant-instructor meetings. You may have activities to complete each day and will receive feedback on all assignments. Instructors may provide some recorded lessons and readings to supplement or replace some live meetings. Your instructor will go over your schedule during the first workshop class meeting.
Participants will receive a welcome packet with a full schedule and information on accessing our online platform prior to the start of their course.
