About This Course
Get hands-on experience with interviewing, DJing, audio production, video and podcasting at Michigan State University’s national award-winning radio station, Impact 89FM.
You’ll learn about:
- how to record an in-studio music session with a band and interview them
- audio editing to produce an interview and music show
- basics of podcasting
- DJing and playing music in the broadcast studio
- in-person, on location and virtual interviewing techniques and workflows
- writing concert reviews, basic photo, post to web
- social media
- creating graphics in Canva
- And more
This is an in-person, residential program. Participants will stay in an MSU residence hall with at least one roommate. Meals are provided in a residential hall cafeteria. Workshop sessions are held in MSU classrooms, which may be a short walk from the residence hall.
This workshop course is open to youth participants entering grades 7 through 12.
Jeremy Whiting
Instructor
Jeremy Whiting is the general manager of Michigan State University’s student-run radio station, Impact 89FM. He is the former adviser of the broadcast, yearbook and online news programs at Ovid-Elsie High School. Jeremy started at the MIPA workshop as a high school student in the late ’90s and never really left. He has previously served as president of MIPA’s board of directors.
Supplies & Equipment
- This course is scheduled to be held in the offices and studios of Impact 89FM. Access to a laptop to work on assignments outside of class time is optional.
- Google/Gmail account to use Google Classroom, Docs and other services
- Smartphone or portable audio recorder to do interviews
- Notebook to take notes
- Pens and pencils
- Optional: Advanced audio recorders, batteries, SD cards, mics (if you own them or if you can borrow from your school)
- Good attitude, desire to learn, ability to have fun
