Broadcast News
Broadcast News is designed for youth participants who want to create video story packages on news and feature topics while learning about various broadcasting roles. Participants will create work for and help produce a newscast.

Sports Broadcasting is designed for youth participants who want to focus their work in covering sports. Participants will explore sports reporting, including play-by-play and sports news, while producing sports content for a newscast.

Interested in creating better videos? Producing better interviews? Telling better stories? Exploring broadcast news and sports? Our award-winning team of educators will show you techniques to bring your work to the next level. You’ll also help produce our MIPA Today newscast.
You’ll learn about:
- How to produce a high-quality newscast and great news or sports video from any location (including your home)
- How to plan your video work like a storyteller, using two column scripts and/or storyboards to prepare your news package
- Discussing filming in challenging situations similar to what you will encounter as a broadcast journalist in school (like classrooms, hallways, auditoriums, gyms, football stadiums, etc.)
- Practicing different shots (Close-up/Medium Shot/Wide Shot/Over the Shoulder etc…) and the importance of shot sequencing to tell your story
- Getting that “film look” using the manual controls on your DSLR camera with shallow depth of field and letterboxing
- Adding creative b-roll to enhance your story and avoid jump cuts
- Discussing 3-point lighting, studio lighting, on-location lighting and the importance of exposure settings
- Working with different microphones in different situations, focusing on lavalier mics, boom mics and handheld dynamic mics
- Adding natural sound to your news packages and effectively using music
- Writing and producing voiceovers to begin, transition and conclude your story
- Utilizing on-camera talent techniques to introduce and conclude packages while integrating basic anchoring tips
- Editing clips to enhance pacing and make your packages more interesting
- Using professional editing software to add titles, transitions and color correction
- Enhancing your videos with plug-in effects
- Practicing skills through independent pursuit of guided projects and tasks
This is an in-person, residential program. Participants will stay in an MSU residence hall with at least one roommate. Meals are provided in a residential hall cafeteria. Workshop sessions are held in MSU classrooms, which may be a short walk from the residence hall.
Participants may wish to bring equipment from their school media program. MIPA has equipment for use in these workshop courses, but participants involved in school media programs sometimes prefer to use the gear they’ll be using during the school year. Talk to your media adviser.
These workshop courses are open to youth participants entering grades 7 through 12.
Michael Kaufman
Instructor, Broadcast News
Michael Kaufman serves as the program director for LCPS-TV, is a connected educator with PBS Student Reporting Labs and teaches Broadcast Journalism at L’Anse Creuse. In 2019, Kaufman received both the Wall Street Journal Courageous Leader Award and the DAFT Media Teacher of the Year. In 2015, his TV & Broadcast Media program received the Education Excellence 2020 award from the State of Michigan School Boards Association. He was Michigan Theatre Teacher of the Year in 2004, a finalist for Michigan Teacher of the Year in 2005 and is Apple Certified in Final Cut Pro Editing Software.
Jason Springer
Instructor, Sports Broadcasting
Jason Springer started his broadcast career in a small studio in Rockford High School. After graduation, Jason moved to Southfield to attend Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts. His first job was at WZZM-TV as studio crew. From there he traveled to Great Lakes Video Services, quickly moving into management of the small production/duplication company. Then a call came from his old teacher who was leaving her position and requesting Jason return to his high school as a full-time staff member. Twenty years later his job has evolved into Rogueview Community TV manager and Beyond the Rock classroom technician. He instructs students in videography, editing and live production. In his tenure at RHS, the students have brought home 16 Michigan Association of Broadcasters Foundation Station of the Year awards.
Supplies & Equipment
- This course will be held in a computer lab. Access to a laptop to work on assignments outside of class time is optional.
- Google/Gmail account to use Google Classroom, Docs and other services
- Notebook to take notes
- Pens and pencils
- Smartphone or video camera (recommended): MIPA has a limited amount of equipment participants share.
- Those who have equipment from their school (DSLR cameras, microphones etc.) will get instruction on how to master this equipment to be ready for the start of the next school year.
- Recommended: A lavalier mic and some type of camera light may be helpful tools to have as well.
- Good attitude, desire to learn, ability to have fun
- MIPA will supply a limited amount of specialty equipment for participants in Broadcast courses. The Equipment Use & Statement of Responsibility Form is required for participants in Broadcast courses. Please complete this form here.
