BASED ON A [TRUE] STORY:
The 2015 MIPA Summer Journalism Workshop
July 26-30, 2015 | Michigan State University
Everybody has a story. We rely on journalists to find and tell them.
Explore how to tell stories that make a difference, go beyond the surface and get to the truth at the MIPA Summer Journalism Workshop.
Spend five days on Michigan State University’s campus working with some of the best instructors in the nation. Then take what you learn back to your school newspaper, yearbook, video production or news website.
Don’t work on a student media staff? Our journalism-focused curriculum provides skills and techniques that you can apply in a variety of areas — from class to life. Become a better writer, explore print or digital media creation and find your voice.
You’ll make new friends for life, and we guarantee you’ll leave more energized than ever.

It’s All [TRUE]
We’re taking our inspiration for 2015 from the movies. You’ll get a chance to preview a studio film, talk to people about documentary filmmaking and explore storytelling techniques that you can use right away. We’ll also help you hone your writing, reporting, photography, design, video production techniques and digital media skills.
Don’t Get Lost in a Crowd of Extras
We keep our classes small so you’ll get all the individual help you need. Learn the latest trends and innovations, plus get motivated and return home ready to make your student media the best it has ever been! Don’t work on the student media staff at your school? That’s OK, too. We’ll help you build your skills in writing, design, photography, video, business and more!
We have 25 different classes designed to meet your needs. You’ll be immersed in the class of your choice for the week.
There’s No Better Setting Than MSU
Held on one of the most beautiful campuses in the nation, the MIPA Summer Journalism Workshop is the place you’ll want to be this summer. You’ll be able to sit on the banks of the Red Cedar River and visit all the cool spots on campus, including Beaumont Tower, the MSU Dairy Store and the International Center, where you’ll find a food court and the Spartan Bookstore.
The Action is On Campus
You’ll live on campus while attending the workshop, and you’ll be supervised by workshop personnel. We’ve got lots of activities for you. For those wishing to room with a friend, include his or her name on the registration form. Special dietary or housing needs? Let us know ASAP.
Easier to Find Than Your Theater Seat
Get directions and maps of campus. You should be dropped off at the workshop on Sunday and picked up on Thursday at noon. If you’re arriving via train, bus or plane, please make your own arrangements for transportation to and from campus. We strongly discourage local students from commuting because of limited campus parking and safety concerns. Contact us if you have travel questions.
A Better Value Than a Sunday Matinee
We don’t think you’ll find a better workshop value in the Midwest. The registration fee includes three square meals on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, a pizza party Sunday night and breakfast on Thursday; housing; tuition and a T-shirt. We offer discounts to MIPA members and for completing registration by our early deadline. Not sure if your school is a member of MIPA? Take a look or call us at 517-353-6761.
Help to Pay for Your Blockbuster Experience
Use our crowd-funding system, SponsorMe, to raise money from the people you know toward your workshop registration. Start a campaign today! We’ve also got some other great fundraising ideas and scholarships.
What to bring? Where to go?
Download our registration packet for a list of what to pack, what supplies to bring, directions and a map and a schedule of the workshop. Parents: Download our Parent Guide for frequently asked questions, a schedule, workshop rules and phone numbers to reach us during the workshop.
Don’t forget to talk with your journalism adviser about supplies. And before you leave for the summer, grab copies of your newspaper, yearbook or broadcast program to bring along.
Workshop Policies
Yeah, we’ve got some fine print, too. Please review our workshop policies. You’ll need to complete our policy form and health form before your registration is complete.
