Each year, MIPA selects one graduating senior to represent Michigan in the Journalism Education Association‘s national Journalist of the Year competition. Selection is based on portfolios of students’ work. Michigan’s representative is recognized at MIPA’s Spring Awards & On-Site Contest. Portfolios sent to the national competition are judged at the JEA/NSPA Spring National High School Journalism Convention, and winners are announced at the convention’s concluding awards ceremony.
All students who submit a portfolio in the Student Journalist Staff contest are automatically considered to represent Michigan in the JEA competition. Application deadline is in February. Learn how to submit a portfolio
