MIPA’s Individual Category Contests are judged by journalism educators, professional journalists and college journalism students who gather for a day at Michigan State University. It’s a great opportunity to network, and be inspired. You’re invited to join the fun!
Due to the pandemic, MIPA is changing how our contests are judged this year. Judging for the 2020-21 contests will conducted remotely, using MIPA’s online contest platform. Judges work in pairs. We need your help! We will host orientation and remote judging work sessions from 9 a.m.–3 p.m. on on the following dates. Orientation will be at 9 a.m. via Zoom video conference.
- Yearbook: Saturday, Feb. 27 and, if needed, Saturday, March 6
- News, Digital Media & Video: Saturday, April 17
- We may also do some limited judging work in the morning on Saturday, March 27 for News, Digital Media & Video categories.
Judges may also be needed to work outside of these work sessions.

Never been a judge? New to journalism advising? No problem! You have what it takes to be one of our contest judges. We’ll teach you anything specific that you might need to know and we’ll pair you with an experienced judge. No one works alone!
Judging MIPA contests is a great way to see some of the amazing journalism that students across Michigan are producing for their newspapers, yearbooks, broadcast programs and news websites. Advisers who attend tell us every year that it’s one of the most valuable things they do. You’ll leave inspired and with great ideas that you can put to use in your own classroom.
