MIPA is a nonprofit organization composed of Michigan scholastic journalism teachers and student media advisers and their students. The organization is committed to promoting and recognizing excellence in journalism at all levels through education, training and support of student journalists and their advisers. MIPA is housed in MSU’s School of Journalism.

Youth Program Criminal Background Check Authorization

Michigan State University rules require all individuals who have direct contact with minors at a campus youth program pass a criminal background check within 12 months of the program. All individuals interesting in working for the MIPA Summer Journalism Workshop must successfully complete this check before they will be considered for employment.

MIPA Office Assistant

The Michigan Interscholastic Press Association is looking for an exceptional MSU student to serve as an office assistant.

MIPA is a nonprofit organization composed of Michigan scholastic journalism teachers and student media advisers and their students. The organization is committed to promoting and recognizing excellence in journalism at all levels through education, training and support of student journalists and their advisers. MIPA is housed in MSU’s School of Journalism.

The office assistant serves a critical role in MIPA’s operations, working with the executive director and other student employees to run programs, manage membership and support student journalism activities in Michigan.

General Duties:

  • Oversee office activities and work with other student employees to complete projects.
  • Assist with planning and coordinating MIPA events, including conferences, workshops, meetings, contests, etc.
  • Input all event registration materials into databases.
  • Process, input, and organize contest entries.
  • Prepare all individual award materials, including printing, organizing and distributing.
  • Assist with creating promotional materials for the organization, including writing, editing and designing.
  • Process financial paperwork (creating check requests, sending payment invoices and receipts, preparing bank deposits, processing budget category disbursement reports, etc.)
  • Maintain daily office duties, including answering the phone, handling mail and managing supplies.

Work Hours:

  • MIPA’s office hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday
  • The office assistant typically works 15-20 hours per week during MIPA’s office hours
  • Daily hours are flexible to work around class schedules
  • Our student staff works in the MIPA office throughout the year, including summer

Qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled as an MSU student this fall. Open to all majors.
  • Experience setting up, updating and working with technology equipment is a plus.

MIPA Communications Assistant

The Michigan Interscholastic Press Association is looking for an exceptional MSU student to serve as a communication assistant.

MIPA is a nonprofit organization composed of Michigan scholastic journalism teachers and student media advisers and their students. The organization is committed to promoting and recognizing excellence in journalism at all levels through education, training and support of student journalists and their advisers. MIPA is housed in MSU’s School of Journalism.

The communication assistant serves a critical role in MIPA’s operations, working with the executive director and other student employees to support student journalism activities in Michigan.

General Duties:

  • Assist the MIPA executive director to produce MIPA’s newsletter.
  • Assistant the MIPA executive director to produce content for MIPA’s social media channels.
  • Work with the executive director and office staff to produce email marketing campaigns for MIPA members and schedule reminders for key MIPA activities.
  • Assist in managing content on MIPA’s website.
  • Prepare marketing materials, as needed, for MIPA activities.
  • Assist at MIPA’s Fall Conference, Spring Awards & On-Site Contests and Middle School Conference or other programs as needed.

Work Hours:

  • MIPA’s office hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday
  • The communication assistant typically works 8-10 hours per week (that may increase or decrease based on MIPA events and activities)
  • Daily hours are flexible to work around class schedules
  • Opportunities may exist to work in the MIPA office during the summer

Qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled as an MSU student this fall. Open to all majors.
  • Experience managing social media accounts for business or organizations desired
  • Experience managing email lists and using email marketing tools such as Mailchimp
  • Experience managing websites on a WordPress.org infrastructure
  • Knowledge of Adobe InDesign and experience designing is a plus
