Middle School Journalism Experience at the MIPA Summer Journalism Workshop

July 28, 2019 @ 2:30 pm - August 1, 2019 @ 12:00 pm

$470.00 – $525.00
Middle school student journalists

About this class

The MIPA Summer Journalism Workshop was originally designed for high school students. But over our more than 30 years of hosting camps at MSU, we’ve welcomed hundreds of middle school students who want to learn about journalism and media, too.

So, we’ve created a fun and inspiring journalism experience just for students in grades 6-8.

Participate in all the fun of MIPA camp while you make new friends with students your own age during MIPA’s Middle School Journalism Experience. You’ll learn the basics of how to be a news reporter, including writing, design, photography and video.

Please note: Middle school students may participate in recreational and educational activities with high school students, under the supervision of our Middle School Journalism Experience instructor and MIPA staff members. We make every effort to place middle school students of the same gender together as roommates and in adjacent rooms, and we assign special floor counselors to our middle school participants to provide overnight supervision.

  • An introductory class designed just for students in grades 6-8
  • Work with other middle school and junior high students to explore journalism
  • Learn the basics of journalistic interviewing, writing and reporting
  • Learn basic design and typography principles
  • Create a newspaper layout using design software
