The Michigan Interscholastic Press Association is looking for exceptional MSU students to fill two paid positions: Office Assistant and Communication Assistant.
- MIPA is also hiring activity assistants and floor counselors for help for the Summer Journalism Workshop.
MIPA is a nonprofit organization composed of Michigan scholastic journalism teachers and student media advisers and their students. The organization is committed to promoting and recognizing excellence in journalism at all levels through education, training and support of student journalists and their advisers. MIPA is housed in MSU’s School of Journalism.
Office Assistant
The Office Assistant serves a critical role in MIPA’s operations, working with the executive director and other student employees to run programs, manage membership and support student journalism activities in Michigan. This is an hourly position paid through university payroll.
General Duties:
- Assist with planning and coordinating MIPA events, including conferences, workshops, meetings, contests, etc.
- Process, input, and organize contest entries.
- Track and maintain membership records.
- Prepare all individual award materials, including printing, organizing and distributing.
- Assist with creating promotional materials for the organization, including writing, editing and designing and updating the organization’s website.
- Process financial paperwork (creating check requests, sending payment invoices and receipts, recording payments, preparing bank deposits, etc.).
- Regular office duties, including answering the phone, handling mail and managing supplies.
Work Hours:
- MIPA’s office hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday
- The office assistant typically works 15-20 hours per week during the fall and spring semester. Hours will vary based on projects.
- Daily hours are flexible to work around class schedules
- Employees are expected to work MIPA’s major events, including the spring and fall conferences.
- Our student staff works in the MIPA office throughout the year, including summer. Summer hours will vary
Qualifications:
- Must be enrolled as an MSU student this fall. Open to all majors.
- Experience setting up, updating and working with technology equipment is a plus.
Communication Assistant
The Communication Assistant works with the executive director and other student employees to manage MIPA’s social media presence, website, email communication and official newsletter, Stet. This is a project-based position paid a regular stipend, plus an hourly rate for working special events.
General Duties:
- Oversee MIPA’s presence on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube, Flickr and other social media accounts, ensuring regular engagement with followers and monitoring communication by other organizations of interest.
- Assist with updating MIPA’s website, which runs on WordPress.
- Prepare and distribute news releases on organization activities.
- Assist in planning and preparing regular email communication to members and friends of the organization.
- Assist in planning and preparing content for MIPA’s official newsletter, Stet.
- Work as part of the MIPA team at major events.
Work Hours:
- Once established in the position, the communication assistant can work outside the MIPA office and need not keep office hours. MIPA’s office hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday
- Must be accessible to communicate with the executive director as needed and provide quick response to unexpected assignments that may arise.
- Should be available to work MIPA’s major events, including the fall and spring conferences.
Qualifications:
- Must be enrolled as an MSU student this fall. Open to all majors.
- Should be a superb writer.
- Knowledge of the issues facing scholastic journalism desired.
- Should have experience managing a professional presence on social media. Personal social media presence must be appropriate and professional.
- Experience working in public relations a plus.
