MIPA’s One-Day Workshops provide students and advisers a chance to take their skills to the next level. Spend a day at the Michigan State University School of Journalism getting hands-on training in a variety of skill areas for news, yearbook and video student media outlets.
Take the time to learn the tools you’ve been meaning to get to all year. The One-Day Workshops also are a great way to train new staff members and leaders to prepare for next year.

InDesign for Publications

Newspaper Design Clinic
Bring copies of your paper and a sketch pad for ideas.

Photoshop

- Toning photos for publication

Smartphone Journalism
Instructor: Jeremy Whiting, Ovid-Elsie HS
- Capturing, editing and uploading content via smartphone apps
- Using social media
- Working with multimedia content, including video
- Must have an iPhone or Android smartphone, or an iPod touch
Writing for Student Media
Instructor: Shari Adwers, Grosse Pointe North HS
If you’re looking for ways to sharpen and brighten your writing so others will clamor to read it, this interactive seminar is for you. This session will entertain and inspire as well as give you a chance to analyze excellent writing and apply what you learn to your own work. You’ll discuss:
- how to improve interviews
- angles, leads, voice, narrative style
- use of literary devices to tighten and strengthen your writing
This session is designed for students who work on a yearbook, newspaper or news website staff.
Building Next Year’s Staff
Advisers and future editors should consider taking this course in pairs or small groups. Please bring a laptop, if possible, for your group and copies of your editorial policy, staff manual documents, job descriptions, etc. (Digital copies are OK.)

- Recruiting good students for your publication staff
- Generating/updating a staff manual
- Using portfolios for semester exams or for generating writing, design and photography ideas over the summer
- Selling advertising and canvasing the city over the summer
- Planning a first day publication
- Using Storify and other tech. tools to generate interest in social media accounts for your publication
- Justifying to administrators and curriculum directors how journalism meets Common Core state standards
- Lesson planning for the last few weeks of school after seniors leave
