Summer Workshop Class Selection Guide

We have a variety of classes to help introduce you to journalism and media.

• Writing & Packaging the News: This is a great class for a student who has never taken a journalism course. The emphasis of this course is on reporting and writing. It’s great for students who plan to join the staff of their student newspaper or news website this coming school year, or for those who want to learn the basics of journalistic writing.
• Beyond the Basics: This a great class for students who are interested in photography, but don’t have much experience taking photos.
• InDesign for Newspapers: Learn about how to use InDesign to make great pages. This is our newspaper design course for beginners.
• Creative Illustration Techniques: Create dynamic, exciting illustrations for your print, online or video publication using Photoshop and Illustrator.
• Broadcast Boot Camp: Interested in being an on-air talent or working behind the scenes in TV? This is a great class for all experience levels.
• Yearbook Kickstart: Will you be a member of your yearbook staff for the first time this coming year? This is a great class for you.

Most of our program participants are in high school, but we also provide a welcoming environment for students in grades 6-8 who are interested journalism and media. Choose from any of our classes based on your interests and experience level.

If you already have some background knowledge in journalism, we recommend these classes.

CREATIVE DESIGN & GRAPHIC ILLUSTRATION

• InDesign for Newspapers: Learn about how to use InDesign to make great pages. This is our newspaper design course for beginners.
• Creative Illustration Techniques: Create dynamic, exciting illustrations for your print, online or video publication using Photoshop and Illustrator.

WRITING

• Opinion Coverage: Learn how to express your opinion clearly and responsibly through different styles of opinion writing.
• Sports Coverage: Learn how to cover your favorite sports in this writing class.
• Entertainment Coverage: You’ll explore different styles of writing used to coverage entertainment.
• Feature Coverage: Explore feature styles of writing in this course. This is a great writing class for students who work on their newspaper, yearbook or news website.

PHOTOGRAPHY

• Beyond the Basics: This a great class for students who are interested in photography, but don’t have much experience taking photos.
• Shoot Like a Pro: If you already have a DLSR camera and are pretty comfortable with the manual settings, this class might be right for you.

BROADCAST TV

• Broadcast Boot Camp: Interested in being an on-air talent or working behind the scenes in TV? This is a great class for all experience levels.

YEARBOOK THEME & CONCEPTS

• Yearbook Kickstart: Will you be a member of your yearbook staff for the first time this coming year? This is a great class for you. It will provide you with a foundation in creating content for yearbooks.

If you have one year or less of experience on your student newspaper, yearbook, broadcast program or news website, we recommend these classes.
