For prospective staff, speakers/instructors, volunteers, vendors and other adults working with Michigan Interscholastic Press Association youth programs
Michigan State University rules require all employees, volunteers, contractors and other adults who have contact with minors at a campus youth program pass a criminal background check within 12 months of the program. All individuals interested in working for the MIPA office or adults working or volunteering with our youth programs (such as the Fall Conference) must successfully complete this check before they will be considered for employment or allowed to participate in programs.
Complete the authorization form
Please complete the Youth Program Criminal Background Check (CBC) Authorization Form. Sign the form and return it using one of the below methods:
- Online: Complete and sign the form electronically here.
- Download, print and scan the form. Use a smartphone app like Adobe Scan or iOS Notes to turn the paper document into a PDF file or take a very clear photograph of the signed form with your cellphone. Send this form to ask@mipamsu.org so that we can review it and optimize the file for use by MSU’s HR department.
Criminal background check and sex offender registry results
The following types of convictions will normally render an individual ineligible to work or volunteer at a youth program affiliated with Michigan State University:
- Drug distribution activity or felony drug possession
- Sexual offenses
- Crimes of violence involving physical injury to another person
- Child abuse, molestation or other crimes involving child endangerment
- Murder
- Kidnapping
- Any other felony or crime involving moral turpitude
Individuals who have unsupervised access to minors at a youth program may generally not be listed on any sex offender registry.
Individuals who do not have satisfactory criminal background check results will be provided with an opportunity to explain the results and give clarifying information to Human Resources before a final decision regarding eligibility is made.
