This list only includes scholarships open to incoming freshman. Colleges and universities may update information about these scholarships without notice to MIPA, so please check directly with the institution about deadlines and criteria.
Many journalism programs also have scholarships for students already enrolled in a program of study.

Michigan State University
Benjamin J. and Beverly Hall Burns Spartan Scholarship
All students who are entering their freshman or sophomore year at MSU and who are eligible to participate in federal need-based financial aid programs will be considered for this scholarship. Initial scholarship awards may be made only to such students. It is the donor’s preference that scholarships are awarded to students who will be enrolling in the School of Journalism.
Scholarships will be renewable until the recipient’s graduation, no matter what major or college the recipient chooses, provided that the recipient continues in good standing. The recipient must also remain eligible to participate in federal need-based financial aid programs.
Bob Gross Memorial Scholarship
Established by the family and friends of Bob Gross, a sports reporter at the Lansing State Journal, who died in an accident early in his career. He had a 34-year career with the Lansing State Journal and received an award from the Greater Lansing Area Sports Hall of Fame for “Exemplary Dedication and Commitment to High School Sports.”
Qualifications:
- This scholarship is for an entering freshman from mid-Michigan who has a demonstrated interest and intent of majoring in journalism and shows sincere promise as a journalist
- Preference may be given to students interested in being sports journalists
Lawrence and Linda Sims Scholarship
Lawrence H. Sims is a 1971 graduate of MSU with a degree in Economics. Linda (Lein) Sims graduated in 1976 with a degree in Journalism. Their son, Alexander, graduated from the College of Engineering and the Honors College in 2014. This four generation Spartan family, beginning with Linda’s grandfather who was a graduate of Veterinary Medicine, has chosen to honor their family legacy and to provide support for students to attend MSU from their home community of Saginaw, Michigan, where Lawrence and Linda Sims are actively involved as leaders in business and community service.
Qualifications:
- Incoming first year undergraduate students from Saginaw County with a high school GPA of at least 3.5 and who intend to major in Journalism
- If no eligible students from Saginaw County, the Scholarship may be awarded to students from Bay County or Midland County with a high school GPA of at least 3.5 and intending to major in Journalism or one of the majors within the College of Communication Arts and Sciences
- If there are no eligible students from Bay or Midland County, the Scholarship may be awarded to students from the State of Michigan with a high school GPA of at least 3.5, who intend to major in Journalism or one of the majors within the College of Communication Arts and Sciences
- This scholarship is awarded in late spring
Central Michigan University
Lem Tucker Scholarship
The Lem Tucker Scholarship honors the late Lemuel Tucker, a CMU alumnus who made an enormous contribution to journalism by promoting the participation and success of minorities in print and electronic media, as well as general excellence in the practice of journalism. This award provides full tuition, room and board to a CMU student majoring in journalism, broadcast and cinematic arts, or a related field.
Selection criteria
The Lem Tucker Scholarship competition is open to all students regardless of race and ethnicity.
Freshman Student
- A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher
- A minimum score of 940 on the SAT or 18 on the ACT
- Must be accepted as a CMU freshman for fall 2020
Transfer Student
- Proof that at least 24 credit hours from a community college will be completed prior to starting at CMU (transfers from four-year colleges are not eligible)
- A grade point average of 3.3 or higher • Must be accepted as a transfer student for fall 2020
Wayne State University
Journalism Institute for Media Diversity scholarship
Wayne State University’s Journalism Institute for Media Diversity offers one four-year, full-tuition scholarship and one $5,000 Robert McGruder Scholarship to a high school senior or college underclassman.
Michigan Association of Broadcasters Foundation Scholarships
High school seniors who have been accepted at a Michigan college, university or trade school and plan to study and pursue a career in a broadcast-related field may enter. Two $750 scholarships will be awarded.
