MSU is an awesome place for a workshop
Held on the most beautiful campus in the Midwest (yes, we’re biased), the MIPA Summer Journalism Workshop is the place you’ll want to be this summer. You’ll be able to sit on the banks of the Red Cedar River and visit all the cool spots on campus, including Beaumont Tower, the MSU Dairy Store and the International Center, where you’ll find a food court and the Spartan Bookstore.
Enjoy small class sizes
We keep our classes small so you’ll get all the individual help you need. You’ll be immersed in the class of your choice for the week. Learn the latest trends and innovations, plus get motivated and return home ready to make your student media the best it has ever been! Don’t work on the student media staff at your school? That’s OK, too. We’ll help you build your skills in writing, design, photography, video, business and more!
- News Writing Classes
- News Design & Graphic Illustration Classes
- Advertising & Business Classes
- Yearbook Classes
- Video Classes
- Photography Classes
- Digital Storytelling Classes & The Upstart
We’re looking for a few good musicians
In addition to our world-renowned MIPA Variety Show, we’re packing this year’s workshop with wall-to-wall jams. We’ll have chances for you to cover live music events all day long – and we hope you might even think about showcasing your own musical talents. If you’re a musician and would like the opportunity to play a gig at the MIPA Summer Journalism Workshop, contact workshop director Chad Sanders at chad@mipamsu.org. And if you’ve got some samples of your music, send them along!
Staying in the dorm is a blast
You’ll live on campus while attending the workshop, and you’ll be supervised by workshop personnel. We’ve got lots of activities for you. For those wishing to room with a friend, include his or her name on the registration form. Special dietary or housing needs? Let us know ASAP.
MSU is easy to find
Get directions and maps of campus. You should be dropped off at the workshop on Sunday and picked up on Thursday at noon. If you’re arriving via train, bus or plane, please make your own arrangements for transportation to and from campus. We strongly discourage local students from commuting because of limited campus parking and safety concerns. Contact us if you have travel questions.
Affordable, all-inclusive registration fee
We don’t think you’ll find a better workshop value in the Midwest. The registration fee includes three square meals on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, a pizza party Sunday night and breakfast on Thursday; housing; tuition and a T-shirt. Not sure if your school is a member of MIPA? Take a look or call us at 517-353-6761. Our workshop fee is competitive; check around.
Scholarships and fundraising opportunities
You can also use our new crowd-funding system, Sponsor Me, to raise money from the people you know toward your workshop registration. Start a campaign today! We’ve also got some other great fundraising ideas and scholarships.
You may also qualify for financing via PayPal’s Bill Me Later program. Learn More

What to bring? Where to go?
Download our registration packet (PDF) for a list of what to pack, what supplies you need, directions and a map and a schedule of the workshop. Make sure your parents have a copy, too, so they know what you’re doing during the week! If you’ve already registered, we’ll email you and your parents when this packet is ready.
Don’t forget to talk with your journalism adviser about supplies before school is out. And before you leave for the summer, grab copies of your student media to bring along.
Teachers, join us for Adviser Day!
Tuesday is Adviser Day at the MIPA Summer Journalism Workshop. Come visit your students, check out their classes and have lunch. Learn more and sign up!
Workshop Policies
Yeah, we’ve got some fine print, too. Please review our workshop policies. You’ll need to complete our policy form and health form before your registration is complete.

Work at MIPA Camp!
MIPA is looking for adults and college students to work as floor counselors and activity assistants. This is a great opportunity for journalism teachers and students looking to be teachers. All workshop employees undergo a background check.
