2024 Student Media Leadership Workshop

May 4 @ 9:30 am 2:30 pm

Select a ticket below to register. This is an in-person program.

MIPA invites up to five students from each of our member programs to attend this workshop for future leaders in broadcast, print or online news, or yearbook. (Advisers do not need to attend with students.)

We encourage student participants to complete the online registration form with a parent. If a school or media program is paying the registration fee, upon request MIPA can provide a combined invoice for all registered students.

In this workshop, students will work with award-winning journalism advisers with decades of experience in training leaders for all of the challenges a school year brings. They’ll take your students through identifying key challenges and issues from their publications’ experiences and turning them into action steps for next year’s initiatives. As they develop their plan for the next year, they’ll also participate in roundtables aimed at sharing ideas and resources about leadership, staff culture and trends!

Summary of Key Policies

Payment Policy

All fees must be paid before a participant is allowed to take part in our programming. If your school has said it will pay for part or all of the registration fee, please verify payment with your teacher and/or school office before the start of the program.

Participants who owe a balance may pay by cash, money order, cashier’s check or credit card. We reserve the right to decline personal checks after April 26. Payments by credit card can be made at https://mipamsu.org/payment

Bounced checks will be assessed a $30 service fee and the participant will be removed from registration until a credit card payment, money order or cashier’s check for the registration amount plus the service fee has been received.

Refund Policy

Full refunds of programs fees will be made if MIPA is notified of a cancellation at least 24 hours in advance of the start of the program. Refunds of 50% will be made if cancellations are received prior to check-in by 24 hours or less. There will be no refunds for no-shows or those who do not complete the program for any reason, including any participant who is removed from our program for violating our rules.

If for some reason you cannot come to the workshop, you may transfer your registration to another person.

If MIPA cancels this program or switches to remote learning prior to the start of the program, participants will have the option to receive a full refund.

Required Permission Form Packet

To complete the registration process, a parent or guardian must complete and return our permission form packet, which includes:

  1. Parent/guardian consent to participate in our program (required);
  2. Medical treatment authorization, which provides us with important health information about the participant and provides permission to treat the participant in the event of an injury or other medical problem (required);
  3. Media release form, which provides permission for participants to be photographed and videotaped (required).
  4. Permission to drive or commute independently, for participants driving themselves to our program.
  5. Permission for drop-off by, pick-up by, or early release to another individual for those getting dropped off or picked up by someone other than the designated parents/guardians listed on workshop permission forms, or for participants who may be riding to our program in a vehicle driven by another youth participant.

The first three forms listed above are mandatory for all participants. MIPA must have these signed forms on file before a participant is allowed to participate in our workshop.

These forms may be in addition to permission forms from your school.

Special Needs & Accommodations

MIPA is committed to providing equal opportunity for participation in all programs, services and activities. Accommodations for persons with disabilities may be requested by contacting Jeremy Steele, MIPA executive director, at 517-353-6761 or ask@mipamsu.org at least 10 business days prior to the start of our program so that we have time to make necessary arrangements.
