Editorial Writing Contest
- One team per school/up to two (2) students per team
- Cost: $6 per team
- Limit: 26 students
- 9-10:45 a.m.
Contestants (two per school) must report to the assigned room at 9 a.m. Late competitors will not be allowed to enter:
- In this contest, students will listen to a presentation from the same person as the feature writers and news writers.
- The two students will choose a side/opinion and the object is to write an editorial based on the information. They will also have time to ask questions.
- The editorial will be judged on editorial writing style and format and skill in grammar, spelling, punctuation and capitalization. It should consist of an introduction, body and conclusion and a purpose (interpret, persuade, criticize, praise) should be evident. Students should include important, relevant facts and try to stimulate the readers to think their way to the opinion in your editorial.
- Students may bring dictionaries, thesauri and style books. Paper will be provided, but students should bring pens and pencils.
- Winning entries become the property of MIPA and may be published by MIPA.
- Students will have until 10:45 a.m. to complete this contest.
Feature Writing Contest
- Up to two (2) students per school
- Cost: $3 per student
- Limit: 25 students
- 9-10:45 a.m.
Contestants must report to the assigned room at 9 a.m. Late competitors will not be allowed to enter:
- This is an individual contest. Students from the same school DO NOT work together.
- Here they will write a story based on a speaker, who will also be speaking to the news and editorial writers.
- The story will be judged on a lively and colorful lead; feature style as opposed to news style, including colorful details, quotes and possibly anecdotes; copy that appeals to the reader’s interest; emotional impact; and skill in grammar, spelling, punctuation and capitalization.
- Students may bring dictionaries, thesauri and style books. Paper will be provided, but students should bring pens and pencils.
- Winning entries become the property of MIPA and may be published by MIPA.
- Students will have until 10:45 a.m. to complete this contest.
News Writing Contest
- Up to two (2) students per school
- Cost: $3 per student
- Limit: 25 students
- 9-10:45 a.m.
Contestants must report to the assigned room at 9 a.m. Late competitors will not be allowed to enter:
- This is an individual contest. Students from the same school DO NOT work together.
- Here they will write a story based on a speaker, the same speaker who will be presenting to the editorial and feature students. Students will get a chance to ask questions.
- The story will be judged on news writing style; a strong lead; good quotes; pinpointing the main idea of the session and highlighting it; and skill in grammar, spelling, punctuation and capitalization.
- Students may bring dictionaries, thesauri and style books. Paper will be provided, but students should bring pens and editing pencils.
- Winning entries become the property of MIPA and may be published by MIPA.
- Students will have until 10:45 a.m. to complete the story.
