Why join MIPA?

The MIPA organization provides a whole host of services for advisers and students. Some of these include:

  • Two conferences with top-notch speakers for students to learn practical information they need to put out great publications and to learn about issues and careers in journalism.
  • A summer workshop featuring specific courses in newspaper, yearbook, broadcast, desktop publishing, writing and photography.
  • A “hotline” for legal problems high school
    publications may face.
  • A mentorship program for new and inexperienced advisers.
  • A liaison between Michigan’s longest continuously accredited journalism school and junior high/high schools.
  • A full-time executive director to coordinate summer credit courses for advisers and other activities throughout the year.
  • A Web site and newsletter to keep the membership informed plus e-mail messages throughout the school year.
  • An occasional advisers’ retreat where teachers can relax, exchange ideas and attend informative work sessions.
  • An evaluation service for newspapers, yearbooks, broadcast programs, Web sites and literary magazines and contest for the Spartan Award, the highest award MIPA presents to publications plus an individual category contest for newspapers.
  • Hall of Fame for publications with longstanding traditions of excellence.
  • Newsletter four times a years.
  • Reduced fees at conferences and the summer workshop.
